Ability of Latin America laboratories to detect antimicrobial resistance patterns: experience of the SENTRY antimicrobial surveillance program (1997-2000) BJID
Mendes,Rodrigo E.; Reis,Adriana O.; Gales,Ana C.; Jones,Ronald N.; Sader,Hélio S..
The accuracy of antimicrobial susceptibility tests is a crucial step for the clinical management of patients with serious infections. They must be reliable and precise because they will guide antimicrobial therapy. Our main objective was to compare the results of susceptibility testing performed by the SENTRY coordinator laboratory with those reported by the participating Latin American medical centers. A total of 10,277 bacterial isolates were tested by the reference broth microdilution method at the coordinator laboratory in the United States. The tests were performed and interpreted following the National Committee for Clinical Laboratory Standards (NCCLS) recommendations. Ten antimicrobial agent-organism combinations were analyzed. The susceptibility...

Accreditation in Australian agriculture – on the right track or are farmers lost in the maze? AgEcon
Richards, Christine L.; Morgan, Christopher K.; Baldwin, Basil J..
The practices products and resource management of Australia’s farm managers and their environmental consequences are being closely scrutinised by the community. Accreditation is an approach increasingly being used to monitor these matters across agricultural industries. Quality Assurance and Environmental Management Systems have gained prevalence as a means of validating activity and providing evidence of meeting stewardship responsibilities. This paper reviews the range of programs and systems available to primary producers across Australia. In this review it is argued that the growth of these accreditation systems has given rise to confusion, duplication, and increased management and industry costs, with limited assurances to customers and the community...

Audit risk factors in certification: How can risk-oriented audits improve the quality of certification standards? AgEcon
Schulze, Holger; Albersmeier, Friederike; Spiller, Achim; Jahn, Gabriele.
Over the past few years, certification standards have become increasingly relevant for the agribusiness sector. Substantial parts of the value chain are already certified by standards such as QS, IFS or EurepGap. It is not known, however, whether these approaches can actually ensure a high quality control. This article is based on the analysis of the data base of the QSsystem with more than 72,000 companies involved. It tries to deduce some first empirically rich hypotheses about the connection between auditing quality and the institutional framing of the certification.

Villalobos,Pablo; Padilla,Carlos; Ponce,Cristian; Rojas,Álvaro.
Agrifood markets worldwide have focused on searching for new quality attribute differentiators, which capture the attention of consumers and meet their needs. The purpose of this research was to determine the importance of a set of quality attribute differentiators associated with a beef cut on the choice behavior of the Chilean consumer. The evaluated differentiating characteristics were: price, origin, production method, and quality assurance. A total of 750 subjects were surveyed in the following cities: Talca, Rancagua, and Santiago. Conjoint analysis was carried out to estimate the impact of the assessed attributes on the purchase decision of the consumers polled. Findings point out that the quality attribute differentiators significantly influence...

Can Quality Revitalize the Alaskan Salmon Industry? AgEcon
Babcock, Bruce A.; Weninger, Quinn.
Declining salmon prices, due primarily to expansion of farmed salmon production, have reduced revenues for Alaska's wild salmon fisheries by roughly 62 percent over the past 10 years. One possibility for reversing this trend is to differentiate wild and farmed salmon in consumer markets through quality improvements and marketing. We use a simple conceptual model to highlight the challenges that Alaska's wild salmon industry must overcome before the industry is likely to see significant revenue gains from increased quality. Our tentative conclusion is that product differentiation could increase profits for wild salmon. However, implementation may require significant departures from traditional production and management practices and possibly an amendment to...

CATTLE ON FEED EVALUATION, PART I: FEEDLOT MANAGEMENT PRACTICES AgEcon
Dargatz, David.
The NAHMS Cattle on Feed Evaluation (COFE) was designed to provide both participants and the industry with information on the nation's feedlot animal population for education and research. The USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) collaborated with NAHMS to select a statistically valid producer sample (3,214 producers) to provide inferences to the nation's feedlot animal population. Included in the study were 13 states that accounted for 85.8 percent of the U.S. cattle-on-feed inventory as of January 1, 1994. NASS telephone interviewers contacted a total of 3,214 producers by telephone or personal interview from August 1 through September 16, 1994 for Part I. Contact for this paper: David Dargatz

Changes in proximate composition and lipid quality of atherina atherina sp. during sun drying process OceanDocs
Selmi, S.; Bouriga, N.; Faure, E.; Trabelsi, M..
Devising quality assurance procedures for assessment of legacy geochronological data relating to deglaciation of the last British-Irish Ice Sheet ArchiMer
Small, David; Clark, Chris D.; Chiverrell, Richard C.; Smedley, Rachel K.; Bateman, Mark D.; Duller, Geoff A. T.; Ely, Jeremy C.; Fabel, Derek; Medialdea, Alicia; Moreton, Steven G..
This contribution documents the process of assessing the quality of data within a compilation of legacy geochronological data relating to the last British-Irish Ice Sheet, a task undertaken as part of a larger community-based project (BRITICE-CHRONO) that aims to improve understanding of the ice sheet's deglacial evolution. As accurate reconstructions depend on the quality of the available data, some form of assessment is needed of the reliability and suitability of each given age(s) in our dataset. We outline the background considerations that informed the quality assurance procedures devised given our specific research question. We describe criteria that have been used to make an objective assessment of the likelihood that an age is influenced by the...

Faktoren für die Zufriedenheit mit Qualitätssystemen aus Sicht der Primärerzeuger AgEcon
Enneking, Ulrich; Obersojer, Thomas; Kratzmair, Marion.
In order to ensure and to improve quality in the agro-food sector quality systems have to undergo a permanent change: simple end-of-the-pipe monitoring is therefore being replaced with management oriented concepts. Farmers are also increasingly requested to implement quality systems. This paper gives an overview of quality regimes in the agro-food sector and compares three systems in the domains of pork production, potato growing and the cultivation of hop. 315 Bavarian farmers were interviewed in order to identify factors which may influence the satisfaction with quality systems. Differences between the three quality regimes were moderate with respect to the overall satisfaction. Hop growers judged their system to improve production efficiency while the...

Farm Animal Welfare and Quality Verification AgEcon
Uzea, Adrian D.; Hobbs, Jill E..
Existing empirical evidence suggests that farm animal welfare may not be a top-of-mind issue for many consumers in North America. Nevertheless, there is pressure from animal welfare groups on food retailers and processors to implement more stringent requirements for their suppliers. Is the demand for more stringent animal welfare protocols primarily determined by a subset of consumers with very strong preferences or by an underlying change in consumer and societal preferences? Who do consumers trust for credible quality assurances with respect to farm animal welfare attributes? This paper provides a basis for further analysis of these issues. The roles of different stakeholders in delivering farm animal welfare quality assurances to consumers are first...

FEEDLOT '99, PART I: BASELINE REFERENCE OF FEEDLOT MANAGEMENT PRACTICES, 1999 AgEcon
The National Animal Health Monitoring System (NAHMS) is sponsored by the USDA:APHIS: Veterinary Services (VS). The NAHMS Feedlot '99 Study included feedlots of 1000-head or greater capacity from the 12 leading cattle feeding states. Feedlots included in the study represented 84.9 percent of U.S. feedlots of this size and contained 96.1 percent of the U.S. feedlot cattle inventory on feedlots with 1000-head or greater capacity as of January 1, 2000. For the purposes of the study, operations were grouped into two size categories: those with capacities of between 1000 and 7999 head, and those with capacities of 8000 head or more. Beef animals were the main type of cattle placed in feedlots regardless of operation size. Approximately one-half of the placements...

Linking Animal-Health-Related Information to an Integrated-Animal-Health System AgEcon
Fick, Johanna; Doluschitz, Reiner.
EU-regulation (EG) 178/2002 and the EU hygiene package have fixed general principles and requirements for the food law. Some of these principles and requirements are related to the issues of traceability and quality assurance along the agro-food-chains and affect all participants of the supply value chain. This paper focuses on the implementation of these requirements to the livestock farmer and veterinarian segment of the supply value chain. Livestock farmers and veterinarians are responsible for animal health, which is one of the key features of quality assurance. Furthermore, both groups already document information related to animal health. Often, the documentation is comprehensive and at times redundant, and is accomplished manually. Currently, an...
